Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy

IBS Hypnotherapy

Irritable bowel syndrome can be unpredictable and disruptive. I work with you to develop a calmer, more confident response to symptoms, in Orpington or online.

Understanding IBS

Support for the gut-brain connection

I use gut focused cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy to help you manage the psychological and behavioural factors that can influence IBS and develop a calmer, more confident response to symptoms.

Symptoms that disrupt daily life

Irritable bowel syndrome can be unpredictable and disruptive. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and urgency can affect work, travel, socialising and confidence.

The stress and symptom cycle

Stress and anxiety can also make symptoms feel worse, creating a cycle in which concerns about your gut increase tension, which may then increase symptoms.

Not all in the mind

The aim is not to suggest that IBS is ‘all in the mind’. It is to work with the recognised connection between the brain, nervous system and digestive system to help reduce the impact IBS has on your life.

Living with IBS

How IBS can affect daily life

You may recognise some of these patterns. They can gradually make IBS feel even more intrusive.

Worrying about access to toilets
Avoiding travel or unfamiliar places
Changing what you eat because of fear of symptoms
Feeling anxious before leaving home
Monitoring your stomach constantly
Avoiding social events
Feeling embarrassed or frustrated by symptoms

How cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy can help

Cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy combines gut focused hypnosis with psychological strategies designed to reduce the impact of symptoms and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour.

What to expect

How treatment is tailored to you, and what a session involves.

IBS affects people differently, so treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms, triggers and goals.

Sessions may include cognitive techniques, relaxation, guided imagery, gut-focused hypnosis, behavioural strategies and self-hypnosis.

Hypnosis is used as a focused state of attention. You remain aware and in control throughout.

Please note: IBS should be medically assessed before beginning hypnotherapy, particularly if symptoms are new or changing. Hypnotherapy is used as a complementary approach and does not replace medical investigation or treatment.
