About Dr Linda Mortimer
Psychologist, researcher and cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist.
I have a PhD in Psychology and currently work in psychological research at King’s College London. I see clients from a private practice in Orpington, Kent, and online, using cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy to help you understand what may be keeping a problem going and then work with you to change it.

I'm Linda
How I came to this work, and how I practise.
I have spent much of my career studying how people think, feel and behave, first as a psychologist and educator, and now as both a psychological researcher and hypnotherapist.
That background shapes the way I practise. I use cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy to help you understand the thoughts, beliefs and learned behaviours that may be keeping a problem going, and then work with you to change them.
My approach is practical, collaborative and evidence-informed. I’ll take time to understand what is happening, what may be maintaining the problem and, importantly, what you would like to be different.
How I work
Two things shape the way I practise.
Psychology at the heart of my practice
I have a PhD in Psychology and currently work in psychological research at King’s College London. That means I bring both therapeutic experience and a strong understanding of psychological research to my work with clients.
- Doctoral research on anxiety, and how the way we imagine future events can influence how we feel about them
- Research into mental imagery and behaviour change
- The development of psychological and health interventions
- Extensive experience in psychology research and education
Why cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy?
I work primarily from a cognitive behavioural perspective, combining hypnosis with established psychological techniques. You remain aware and in control throughout. Depending on what you are experiencing, our work might involve:
- Identifying unhelpful thought patterns
- Changing established habits
- Gradually approaching situations you have been avoiding
- Guided imagery and mental rehearsal
- Relaxation techniques and self-hypnosis
What you can expect from me
A little about how our work together will feel.
Warm and non-judgemental
Therapy should feel like something we are doing together.
Practical and straightforward
We’ll agree clear goals and a plan built around you, rather than a standard script.
Curious about what works for you
Evidence-informed and led by what you are experiencing, so you build skills and confidence you can keep using long after our sessions have finished.
How we’ll work together
From your first phone call to the skills you take away.
A free 15-minute conversation by phone or online, with no obligation. It is a chance to find out more about cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, ask any questions and learn how we can work together to achieve your goals. You don’t need to know whether hypnotherapy is right for you before getting in touch.
Sessions run for 60 minutes, in person in Orpington or online. I’ll take time to understand what is happening, what may be maintaining the problem and, importantly, what you would like to be different.
We’ll agree clear goals and develop a personalised treatment plan around you rather than using a standard script. Some people book sessions one at a time, others work towards a clear therapeutic goal over a package of four.
The aim is not for you to become dependent on therapy. It is for you to develop skills and confidence that you can continue using long after our sessions have finished.
