Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Do you suffer from IBS?

If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you will be very aware of how draining the physical and mental effects can be, especially if you’ve had to cope with the condition for a long time.

The good news is that hypnotherapy can help you, both the physically and emotionally. This is because hypnotherapy uses deep physical relaxation to directly affect the sympathetic nervous system. In fact the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and British Medical Association (BMA) specifically recommend hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) because of the way it focuses on the mind/body relationship.

Research pioneered by Professor Whorwell, a gastroenterologist at Wymthenshawe Hospital, shows that hypnotherapy can make significant contribution to the treatment of IBS. Whorwell began investigating the application of hypnotherapy for management of IBS in the 1980s and his research shows that over 60% of IBS sufferers who undertake hypnotherapy see long term improvement, or complete disappearance of symptoms, often with no recurrence.

After sessions with me you may feel more confident; more relaxed in situations that have previously challenged you.

Hypnotherapy can help you break the cycle of pain and anxiety related to IBS, and has done so for thousands of people.A recent client has written a lovely testimonial explaining how hypnotherapy for IBS has helped her:

After suffering for many years with severe tummy bloating and cramps and tightening across the tummy, to the extent that I would no longer wear skirts or any form of tight dress, I decided, after having hypnotherapy with Linda Mortimer for something else, with great success, to try it for IBS. My systems were bloating, uncomfortable feeling of tightness around the stomach area, and the need to rush to the toilet first thing in the morning. Certain foods would trigger an attack along with stressful situations. I had a total of 3 sessions with Linda, and straight away after the first session I noticed a difference, the bloating had definitely subsided and the need to rush to the bathroom every morning had gone. Now, after a couple of months, I confidently wear skirts and dresses again and I do not have a huge bloated tummy, I still get bloated by the end of the day, like any other person which is normal. For me, personally hypnotherapy for my IBS situation has been the best thing ever and I would highly recommend anyone suffering the systems of IBS to try hypnotherapy.

How hypnotherapy can help IBS

In general, most people start to experience positive changes (physical, mental and emotional) from the first session, with  improvements in symptoms and management over 6 sessions. Evidence shows that 6 hours of treatment over 6 one-hour sessions works well, with the opportunity to top these up in the longer term.

During these sessions you will:

  • understand how the mind and body affect each other, and how this works with IBS
  • learn relaxation and stress management.
  • discover the importance of building a positive view of yourself, so that you have the resources to begin making the changes that will be needed
  • learn how to manage symptoms whenever they occur, using self-hypnosis and pain management techniques eg glove anaesthesia
  • Address and improve more general feelings of being out of control, frustrated, uncomfortable in your own skin; as well as chronic low self-esteem, anxiety, isolation, depression.
